The Importance of Brand Identity in selecting the right Domain Name for your Website

I tend to find clients who wonder about brand identity in selecting the right domain name for their website. It is important to consider a couple of factors when choosing your domain name for your business. Your domain name is considered your brand identity or recognition and it is what people are going to remember when they visit your website so it is very important to consider what name to purchase when you are first setting it up. If you are just starting up your online business, you should start off by branding in choosing the selection in names. It doesn’t always mean you need to use keywords because keywords do not have to be a domain name. Keywords in the domain name use to be important in terms of ranking in a website but at this time it is not so much as important as it use to be for many reasons. Nowadays you can use any domain name and still rank high but only if you know how to do this. A keyword is not going to be as memorable or well known as a branded name phrase. You know that everyone is aiming for the keywords and many will choose a keyword as their domain name to get noticed in the search engines.

If you website niche in terms was about link building and you wanted to buy linkbuildingservices.com because you know it is a highly searched keyword, think of others online who are also aiming for that same keyword. They will consider buying something similar such as these domain names.

  • linkbuildingservicesareus.com
  • linkbuildingservicesoneway.com
  • linkbuildingalloneway.com
  • linkbuildingonewayservices.com

So just by looking at these domain names, how would I know right off hand who you are if I don’t remember your website url? I mean, I forgot to bookmark your site so now I’d have to click all the links shown available in my search to find you.

Let’s take a look at the two search engines for example,
Google.com or Search.com

We know these are both search engines to search for our terms but whom will we choose first? Google of course because they did a good job in using the method of brand identity for their business. Google wasn’t actually a well known name before they started their company but they certainly did a excellent job at branding their name. I heard that Google’s name came from a ridiculous high number. It has been even in the dictionary because they branded it so well to make it so memorable.

As for search.com, now how many people have actually ever been on this search engine? Did you even know it exist? I mean if you didn’t know anything about choosing a certain search engine to use and you decided to use Google to search for an engine, lol silly right using Google to search for another search engine lol but anyway if you were seeking another to use instead of Google, you would type in the search bar “search engine” and would run across altavista.com. bing.com, dogpile.com and ask.com on the first page and if you’d scroll down, you still won’t see search.com. You have to type in “metasearch search engine” in order to find it on the first page or you’d have to know to use thier good keyword name “search” of course in order to get to it. I mean who would even search for the term “metasearch search engine” anyway especially if you don’t know anything about the term metasearch. It’s a great domain name and keyword but its not even as memorable as Google because it has no branding to it. So you see using keywords is not always best especially if your goal is to be remembered for your niche.

As for as where to go to buy your domain name I would go with checking out godaddy.com as they are listed as an ICANN register. ICANN stands for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. This is the company that is responsible for the assigning and registration of domain names. They determined what extension will be used for your domain name as to whether they add the .com, .net, .info, and so on. They determine whether or not these extra extension could be available for purchase. You can always search for a list of ICANN registers in Google and you may get the first result of the complete site icann.org. Godaddy is also listed and they are also one of the most well known Domain Registrations out there. They will registered just about any name that hasn’t been taken already. Most high competitive keywords are already taken or mimicked in some way. Just remember the.com are the most common extension. It is used highly more than any other extension.

Whatever choice you make in selecting the right domain name for your website, it is important to know if you want to start a brand for your company so you can easily be remembered. You should do this from the beginning so that you can be easily found amongst the competition. Make it short and easy to remember, use this method to build your business around it.

Jean, I agree with you 100% but because I am a free writer, I enjoy not using so many references when it comes to posting in my own personal and business blog. I love to write in my own words what ever comes to mind. I write from my own personal experiences as well. Surely there will be more post to come on brand identity because this topic alone is very much needed.
